Professor Derek Van Rheenen serves at UC Berkeley as the Faculty Director of the Cultural Studies of Sport in Education (CSSE) M.A. Program, Executive Director of the Athletic Study Center, and Associate Adjunct Professor.
Dr. Van Rheenen's research uses a critical lens to examine the social construction and multiple meanings of sport in culture. This cultural studies perspective allows him to study a wide variety of fields, from student athlete academic achievement to the growing academic discipline of sport tourism.
